Hertzler Doings~Aug. 3-9, 2015

Mon.-Catch up day. Especially enjoyed catching up with Rosalee on the phone and catching up on some needed rest in the afternoon.

Tues.-Picked and prepared the remaining green beans. Pulled out the plants. Picked tomatoes.  Made a big crockpot full of mac and cheese, green beans, and hot dogs. Had Nathan for several hours and he slept in my bed for 2 1/2 hours and didn't really want to wake up when his mommy came for him. Michael and Susan both have some job opportunities coming up. Life is changing. Rapidly. Today I made a list of what I like about my children. I'm thinking about posting it on my bedroom door and seeing if they notice. I just don't want them to think that I think I'm going to die or anything like that. I just want them to know how much I love them and like them and why.

Wed.-Up early. Flight from Richmond at 7. Went to Atlanta. Got to LAX in CA around 11:00 CA time. 1 1/2 hour flight plus 4 hour flight. Not bad. While we were waiting to rent a car, Phil talked with a shrimp farmer. Went to a Thai restaurant and had chicken cashew with rice. Our waiter wants to go to Thailand. Laid down in our comfort inn around 3 and I slept straight through until 8:30. Woke up to a beautiful pink sunrise. Showered and got ready for tomorrow and went back to bed and slept like a rock.

Thurs.-Went across the ferry from Newport to Catalina Islands. Played miniature golf and walked around. Ate a buffalo burger with blue cheese, argula, sweet sauce, and fries. Had roasted beets with goat cheese and nuts as an appetizer and Phil had basically raw tuna.  We went to a candy shop and each got a bag of homemade chocolates and we sat in the square and listened to a young man sing accompanied with his guitar and he had a bucket in front of him for money. It was wonderful. We watched some brave beginners learn to snorkel and saw big orange fish swimming in the water around them. Everyone here is on vacation and everyone looks happy. So many interesting people. I met a lab technician while we were standing in line to board the ferry to go back to base. She divides her time between Arizona and CA and doesn't feel settled in either place because both places feel like home. She looked and acted like Lisa Betz so I liked her immediately. I was hungry when we got back to the motel and Phil went to the lobby and got me microwave popcorn, a banana, and chips. Yum. Watched a movie but I already forget what it was as I write this over a week later. Slept like a rock again.

Phil had an unfortunate event take place as he was parking the car while I waited in line to board the ferry in the morning. A young man backed his car right into our rental. He was polite and he gave Phil his info and later Phil talked to his father who was a lawyer and he said some nice words about the young man to the father and the father thanked him for them. Everything worked out well in the end but it did take some phone calling and paper work but our insurance co. and the car rental-Avis-couldn't have been kinder as were those who caused the accident.

Fri.-Headed to San Diego and followed the Coastal Hwy. Stopped at a hippy coffee shop and listened to psychedelic people talking about anti-disestablishment and other antigovernment theories. (Phil just wrote that line.) Stopped at a mission on a hill and talked to a young man. He has lived in CA for 5 years but hails from Alexandria, Va. He told us to make sure we go to Julian and have some apple pie, which is exactly what we did. We spent the night at a beautiful bed and breakfast and watched a fun spy movie. We got the double double bed room. But first, we went to the San Diego Wild Life Park in Encendido. We spent several hours there, walking around, bussing around in the African Safara ride. There are 2,000 acres there. We could have spent another day there.

Sat.-After we bought an apple pie, we headed to Riverside, where we met Eric and Tess Weaver and had a wonderful hour with them, hearing about their lives and ventures. I hope I can always keep in touch with them some how. I always think that we are aunt and uncle to Eric but we aren't really. Phil is first cousin to Eric's dad, Ed, and he is married to Anne. She is Linda's sister and Linda is married to Phil's brother, Paul. So, we may as well be aunt and uncle.

I have hope for America. There are so many wonderful people wherever we go and God is everywhere we go and people are seeking Him. CA is definitely pro-family.

We drove through Cleveland National Forest and saw these signs, "Please don't drink and drive, in memory of _______  ____________." And "Keep your dreams alive. Please don't drink and drive."

CA is experiencing a severe drought and there are many regulations. Back home it is raining.

We drove through Mesa Verde Indian Reservation, Lajolla, Pauma Valley, Pala Indian Reservation-where there was a very large Casino, before meeting up with Eric and Jess at the Lift Coffee Shop. It took us less than an hour to drive from there to Tom and Kathy Lucas's. We got settled in our room and then Kathy and I swam for several hours. Her nieces and nephew came over and swam. Then, around 5:30, we packed up and went to the Angel's game. They were playing the Baltimore Orioles. Security was high as it was also in all the airports and at Catalina Island. I ate the best ball park hot dog I ever had in my life-the only one at a game. This was the second game I ever watched and last years in the same seat was my first. Kathy also bought popcorn and mixed peanut M&M's throughout the container. We got cookies and cream dot's later. Came home and got in the hot tub and talked with Kathy for at least a half hour. Went to bed and slept 8 hours straight.

Sun.-Had coffee and a delicious pear apple before going to their wonderful church-St Paul's Lutheran. Pastor spoke on Leah and Rachel and how so often we are expecting 'Rachel' and we get 'Leah' and we are disappointed and that our hope should be in God and not in 'Rachel.' It was a whole lot better than that. I took notes all over the bulleting. We went out to eat afterwards and had a huge breakfast. I had fried chicken, two eggs, sausage gravy, and Cajun potatoes. I made fresh lemonade from their lemons that grow year round on their lemon tree in their back yard. First thing this morning, Phil told me he loved me. He's been saying it every morning. This has been the best honeymoon ever. Swam all afternoon and in the evening we went to the Fish Hut. I got tilapia, baked potato, and a salad. We came home and had apple pie and ice cream. I am getting in plenty of exercise but eating way too much.
