Mon.-A busy day packing, getting the car inspected, shopping, holding Nathan during an entire nap (his, not mine) having to cry a little thinking of leaving him for over a week, getting ready for a flight to CA in the morning. Susan packed, mowed two lawns. Michael worked around here and went out to town to buy some things for the trip. The guys built a back porch for Freeman and Alli. Nathan slept through most of the banging. Phil worked at Happy Valley and on paper work and on the farm. The last of the corn has gone to its last customer. Hoping to hit the sack early. 3:00 will come early. Dulles here we come.
Tues.-Left before 4. Made it to plane just as it was being boarded. Almost 5 hour flight. Kathy met us. Drove 45 min to their beautiful home in Orange County, designed and built by them. Michael got the lavender room with the sauna. Susan got the yellow room with the slipper tub. Phil and I got the pink room with the shower/tub. There is nothing quite like the humble generosity of those who have known poverty and are wealthy through hard work. So hungry. No food served on plane. Ate a lunch of sandwiches, chips, etc. 3 hours difference. Rested and swam. Got a tour of Gate--- Farms complete with the beauty of Callemare ponies. Not sure if I spelled that correctly. Beautiful gardens in spite of the drought. BBQ in eve with the rest of the family there. Kelly made us the burgers that she will make at the competition this Sat. If she wins she gets a grill and the right to enter the next contest where she will make big money if she wins. If she doesn't win, something is wrong with the judges. Incredible! Went to bed around 9. Woke up at 3, 5, and 8:00.
Wed.-Leisurely breakfast of eggs, cheese, and bacon, toast, avocado, coffee, yogurt, OJ. Avocado's and lemons grow year round here. Met Susan earlier in the work out room off the laundry room. She showed me several exercises on a machine like the bowflex. Played the piano and sang with Kathy. Left for Pacific Coast Beach around noon. Set up two tents. Soaked in the sun. Michael and Susan and Phil explored the tide pools after Phil and I took a walk on the beach. Kathy got us lunch right on the beach. Toasted cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, Caesar salad, fruit salad, chips, and soda. Kept having to move our stuff back because of tide coming in. Water a little cool. Ate at a restaurant on the beach. Had Thai chicken sticks and fries and shared a pastry/ice cream/chocolate sauce dessert with Kathy.
Thurs.-Disneyland! Kathy dropped us off and went back home to straighten out the mess created when her neighbor left on her water all night. She joined us later. It was very crowded at Disney. Got in a few rides-Boat, Splash Mt., Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Age-Susan was the spy, parades, CA land-flight over Ca.-my favorite. Met the rest of the family-Tom, Dan, Kelly, Sloane, Blythe, Jenny, and later, Bryan, Seth, and Gabe-at a Jazz restaurant on mainstreet Disney. Had beef medallions, mashed potatoes, and green beans, and split another dessert-banana split-with Kathy. Kelly had them bring out champagne for us to celebrate our anniversary. It must be an acquired taste. Did a little shopping. Found Disney socks for Alli. Saw some fireworks before heading home. We could hear the fireworks every night.
Fri.-Went for a tour on the back of Bryan's truck into stark wilderness territory. Got a little sicker than I did on the Disney rides. 2 1/2 hours of exploring the mountains, rock formations, plant communities, cypress or was it cedar trees that only grow on 3 places on the earth-this valley being one of them. Loved this. Stopped for great burgers and fries at In-n-Out. Enjoyed the pool in the afternoon with Jenny, Bryan, Seth, and Gabe. Played Keepaway and Swimthrulegs until I was worn out. Read 'Savannah' by the pool. Went out to Fish House for supper. Got Macadamia Nut Encrusted Roughy, baked potato, and homemade coleslaw. Did some wash. Hung out in hot tub with Kathy.
Sat.-Took 1 hour to get to Tar Pits in Los Angeles. Took 2 hours to get back home due to traffic.
Amazing museum and tour. Mexican Restaurant for lunch. Found out on way back that Kelly won the burger contest! To Vegas she goes! Good money on the line now as a grand prize. Rode ponies in eve. I'm too old for this. Went out to Italian Restaurant around 9 that eve. Young crowd. Restaurant owned by same people that own Fish House. FH attracts the older crowd. Kelly was waiting at the house when we got back to give me a chiropractic treatment. My body was squashed between the horses body and a pole when I tried to turn her around in too tight a space. Kelly fixed me. Thank God.
Sun.-Went to church with Dan and Kelly and girls. Church was wonderful. Worship worshipful. Teaching on the authority of the believer. Got a CD from Dan later as a gift. Raced home. Changed. Raced to the stadium. Watched the Angels play against the Red Sox. They lost. Great fun. Went to Jenny and Bryan's for supper. Had rice, pork, vegetables, berries, watermelon, and peach cobbler and ice cream.
