The "Loving the World" paradox

God so loved the world that He gave His only Son,
That whosoever believes in Him-Jesus,
might have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Do not love the world
or the things in the world.
If anyone loves the world,
the love of the Father is not in him.
(1 John 2:15)

Thomas R. Kelly, in "A Testament of Devotion"
says it this way,
"We are torn loose from earthly attachments
and ambitions--contemptus mundi.
And we are quickened to a divine
but painful concern for this world--
amor mundi.

He plucks the world from our hearts,
loosening the chains of attachment.
And He hurls the world into our hearts,
where we and He together carry it
in infinitely tender love."

I love this.
