Wounded Watchman
Wounded Watchman on the wall
What do you smell?
The stench of danger
The stench of fear
The stench of sulphur
Drawing too near.
Wounded Watchman on the wall
What do you see?
With periscope vision
The trouble I see
Around the corner
What's yet to be.
Wounded Watchman on the wall
What do you hear?
The sound of weeping
And a sound akin
to the sound of singing
and of rushing wind.
Wounded Watchman on the wall
What to you feel?
I feel battered
I feel worn
I feel His heartache
For those who mourn.
Wounded Watchman on the wall
What do you taste?
I taste the salt
of too many tears
I taste the sweetness
of long ago years.
Wounded Watchman on the wall
Why do you bleed?
I'm wounded by knowing
I'm wounded by man
I'm wounded by others
Who don't understand.
Wounded Watchman on the wall
Keep loving and watching
Don't give up your post
Don't give up your call
Your wounds help you watch
So others don't fall.
