Author: Paul
Date: A.D. 61
Theme: Joy in Christ
We can read about Paul's founding of the Philippian church in Acts. 16:12-40.
Paul's personal desire is clearly shown in this letter. He wanted to know Christ more than anything else. He wanted the readers to have the mind of Christ. My Bible notes say that Paul enjoyed a closer friendship with the Philippians than with any other church.
I really like this book.
Here are some of my favorite verses.
Chapter One:
9-11~"And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God."
Chapter Two:
3-4~"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." (the key to unity in the home and the church)
Chapter Three:
8-12~"...I count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord,
for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ...and be found in Him...that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings....not that I have already attained...But I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me...."
Chapter Four:
5-7~"Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and suplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
I would like to say that Philippians is my favorite epistle unless I already said that about Ephesians. There are so many key verses that I left out.
Philippians helps restore my spiritual equilibrium.
I also like the name of the book.
It makes me feel at home.
