A Holy God

I've been reading through the Old Testament book, Exodus. The Children of Israel have gotten out of Egypt and are now learning to follow God in the wilderness.

Moses was invited to come up to the mountain to talk with God but the rest of them had to stay away or die. Moses received the ten commandments and a whole lot more there on the top of Mt. Sinai.

Some of the laws he received are just plain embarassing. Why did God ever think up such laws? There are laws about selling your daughter as a slave; laws about cursing parents and kidnappings. There are laws about beatings and gorings and thievery. There are laws about stoning sorcerers. There are x-rated laws I can't print here.

And I wonder, how does a holy God know about such awful things? Where did a holy God learn about such unholy behavior?
A God that is all good is so aware of the sordid details of the darkness in humanity...How? Why?

Slowly, the sad truth dawns.

He learned about these awful things from the man He created from dust.
He learned about them from every human being created since Adam.
He learned about them from you.
He learned about them from me.

I am so sorry, Holy, Holy God.
