September 19th

September 19, 1956-Phil was born-the first son of seven children. He is leaving for Kenya tomorrow on his 52nd birthday. Our friends in Kenya told me they will celebrate his birthday with the Pokot people at the goat roast. What an interesting birthday party that will be!!

September 19, 1986-Naomi, my brother's wife, was struck by a car as she took her walk on the sidewalks of New Holland, Pa. We would find out later that the driver was intoxicated. We lost her. The whole world lost her. I will write more about this next.

September 19, 1991-Michael Thomas Hertzler was born. After 30 some hours of labor, he entered into this world as a very strong red head. The only time he has brought us any pain was during delivery. He has a sharp mind and a love for God and His Word. He cares about people. He has a sense of justice and the communication skills with which to express it. Girls like him because he is consistently kind and does not play games. When my brother, who had lost his wife, Naomi, heard that Michael was born on the 5 year anniversary of her death, said,"Something good had to happen on that day."

My mother wrote this poem for Michael on his 8th birthday; Sept.19, 1999

Michael

Michael, Michael,
with hair of gold,
Can you believe he's eight years old?
I am so sorry for this
short rhyme
I'll write a longer one when
I have time
But I'll just add this one little touch:
We love you, Michael, so
very much.
